In our fast-paced, digital world, it’s easy to forget where our food truly comes from. The journey from seed to shelf is often a mystery, hidden behind barcodes and plastic packaging. At Balikalikasan, we believe in reconnecting with the source. That’s why we recently embarked on a journey high into the Cordillera mountains to meet the farmer families who grow the food we are so proud to share with you.
This is more than a story; it’s an invitation to see the heart behind what you eat.
The Journey Upward: Leaving the Noise Behind
The winding road climbed steadily, the air growing cooler and crisper with every turn. The hum of the city faded, replaced by the symphony of the mountains: the whisper of pine trees, the distant rush of a waterfall, and the call of wild birds. We were traveling not just to a new location, but to a different pace of life.
A Warm Welcome: The Farmer Family
We were greeted by the Dela Cruz family*, who have cultivated these steep, terraced slopes for generations. Their welcome was as warm as the sunlight filtering through the mist. Their home, a simple wooden structure built with their own hands, stood surrounded by a vibrant tapestry of green.
Names have been changed to respect the family’s privacy.
Lessons from the Land: What We Learned
Spending a day with them was a profound lesson in sustainability, resilience, and knowledge.
1. The Wisdom of Heirloom Seeds
In their hands, we saw not just seeds, but a living legacy. They showed us tiny, dark heirloom rice grains and vibrant native corn kernels, varieties you won’t find in commercial supermarkets. “These seeds are from my lolo’s lolo,” the father, Mang Luis, explained with a proud smile. “They are suited for this land, resistant to our pests, and they hold the taste of our home.”
2. Farming in Harmony with Nature
We saw no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Instead, we saw:
-
Companion Planting: Marigolds nestled between rows of vegetables to deter pests naturally.
-
Terrace Farming: Ancient, masterful stone walls preventing soil erosion on the steep mountainsides.
-
Natural Compost: Kitchen scraps and plant waste transformed into rich, black soil.
They don’t fight against nature; they work with it. This is the very definition of organic—not as a certification, but as a way of life.
3. The Real Cost of a Single Grain
We joined them in planting a new batch of legumes. The work was humbling. Bending under the sun, feeling the rich soil under our fingernails, we gained a deep, tangible appreciation for the labor in every single grain of rice or bean we consume. This connection is something no supermarket receipt can ever provide.
The Heart of Balikalikasan: Our Promise to You
Meeting the Dela Cruz family solidified the core of our mission. Balikalikasan is built on the bridge between these mountain communities and your table.

Carrying the Mountain Home With Us
We left as the sun dipped behind the peaks, carrying with us not just bags of beautiful, nutrient-dense food, but a renewed sense of purpose. We carried the image of their resilience, the taste of freshly harvested sweet potatoes roasted over an open fire, and the sound of their laughter.
This connection is what we bring to you. It’s the story in every bag of heirloom rice, the care in every pouch of mountain-grown herbs, and the purity in every product we curate.
